After two weeks of solitude, living in terror while waiting for an inevitable attack, Erimem was not surprised to find the hundred-strong crew of the Pasteur were all more than keen to move to a more secure location. The compartmentalised nature of the station’s research bays meant that each lab had been assembled – and therefore could be dismantled – in large sections. That sped up their transfer to the hold of the Broadway. The process was helped considerably by the technicians and scientists working to help transport their equipment through to the cargo ship’s holds.

Erimem was also relieved to find that there were many physicians on board the Pasteur. She knew that Helena would have felt that she was negligent in her duties as a doctor if she left the Castle and its inhabitants without adequate medical cover. The Pasteur would provide a hospital’s worth of medical personnel. They would be more than enough to deal with the needs of the refugees on the Castle. She understood Helena’s dedication to her duty as a healer, in the same way that she understood Trina’s sense of responsibility for the child, Jadie. None of that changed the fact that they couldn’t stay with the inhabitants of the Castle much longer. One of the caretakers at the University often talked of doing his ‘good deed for the day’. Erimem was fairly certain they had done their good deeds for many days. More importantly, helping had been the right thing to do. However, they had reached the point at which leaving was the right thing to do.

Watching the crew move the last of the supplies onto transport rigs, Erimem was convinced that she was right – when this mission was complete and the ships were safely back at the Castle, she would insist that it she and her friends should return to the Twenty First Century.

A chirp from her wrist communication device broke into Erimem’s thoughts. She replied quickly and was summoned to the Churchill’s bridge immediately.

Leaving her team to transport the last supplies, Erimem hurried to the Churchill. She found Captain Murray with Rayner at her control panel.

‘Progress?’ Murray asked. He was more tight lipped than usual.

‘The last items are now being loaded,’ Erimem replied. ‘We will be complete within an hour.’

‘Damn,’ Murray muttered. ‘I knew our luck couldn’t last forever.’ He pointed at one of Rayner’s screens, which showed the position of the Pasteur relative to local planets. On the edge of the screen a green blip was moving towards them. ‘You’re sure it’s one of the invader ships?’

Rayner nodded. ‘Fits the profile we got from the probes at Mars.’

‘How long till it gets here?’ Erimem asked.

Rayner glanced at her readings. ‘Current speed… forty minutes.’

Murray looked quickly to Erimem. ‘We need to be finished in fifteen.’

Erimem was already on the move, heading back to the station. ‘I will see to it.’
